(04.01.2007) Living in a reception center can be both boring and lonely. Activities offered are often few and the time spent at the center can be long and difficult. As a volunteer in the Red Cross Youth you can help make the stay a bit easier for young asylum seekers.
While the asylum seekers are waiting for their cases to be processed, they are offered a place in a reception centre. At any given time there are about 10.000 asylum seekers living in reception centers in Norway. Many of them are unaccompanied minors, which means they are under the age of 18 that has come to Norway without their parents. Many of these minors have experienced terrible things, like war and conflict, and they have had to leave everything and everyone behind.
One of the worst things about living in reception centers is the uncertainity they have to live with while waiting for their asylum application to be processed. This waiting time is often very long, and many young people live several years in the reception center.
Join us and make a difference in the everyday life of young people at reception centers for asylum seekers. Maybe your local youth group is already doing activities at reception centers. If not, we can help you get started.
