Active Choice - about sexual health

Av Kajsa Liisa Høiland

(04.01.2007) Norwegians are European champions when it comes to having unprotected sex. That’s why more and more get infected with chlamydia and HIV. The Red Cross Youth works to help people make an active choice to protect their sexual health.

In 2007 over 22.000 cases of chlamydia were discovered in Norway. The majority of those who get infected with chlamydia are between 15 and 24 years old. The number of registered people infected with HIV is also higher than ever. Condoms protect against sexually transmitted infections, but Norway is on the top of the list of countries when it comes to having unprotected sex! Therefore there is little to suggest that the number of infected will decrease in nearby future.

What does the Norwegian Red Cross Youth do?

Make an active choice!

The Red Cross Youth works to decrease the numbers of infected people. Every year we talk to thousands of young people about their sexual health and teach them how to use a condom correctly. We have many experienced and knowledgeable volunteers, and good methods to convey our message.

Through Active Choice we encourage each and everyone to make an active choice regarding sexual health. We believe that youth talk best with other youth, and because of this we use role plays, games, condom demonstrations and open discussions to spread information about hiv/aids and other sexually transmittable infections.

Free condoms

Some years ago the Red Cross Youth started handing out condoms for free. In 2005 we handed out 10.000 condoms. In 2006 we handed out 50.000 condoms. In 2007 we broke the record and distributed more than 200.000 condoms. It is clear that young people need a better offer since the demand is this big. The Red Cross Youth works for a better offer, where the condoms are free and easily available.

The Worlds AIDS day

The Worlds AIDS day is celebrated 1st of December every year, all over the world. Local branches all over Norway take part in this celebration and contribute to create awareness about the worldwide AIDS epidemic. This is a chance to show solidarity with people living with HIV and people suffering from AIDS. You can read more about the Worlds AIDS day here
