Unbelievable, but true

Av Aline Nyinawamahoro & Jennifer Tumusiime, Youth Delegates from Rwanda

(25.05.2009) It was on the 8th of May that Red Cross clocked 150 years, to great excitement of Skien Red Cross youths, who had been spending energy to come up and develop ideas that would make the day look colorful.

Among the activities they decided to have were:

An Active Choice-stand

A stand about active choice, where they would play music and give condom licenses to the passing by youths .This was very exciting because the stand was be placed in front of the youth health station. They would  issue out flyers to people in the streets, which invited them to the evening show where the children had a free movie and some popcorn and soft drinks. The youths were to have a street dance course by Oslo street dancers, and the old were to have a salsa course by the salsa dance group. All this information was in the flyers which the youths were giving out.

It all started at 10am on the 8th of May. The delegates divided everyone into two groups and took the crew to different places where they gave out flyers up to 1pm. After that, they went back to the Red Cross house and started preparing the stands. The weather was not friendly at first, but from 3pm it stabilized.

Fingerprints, Dance and Condom-demonstration

It was started by fingerprints on stop violence, and after the youths came to the stand on the opposite side of the street where the active choice stand was, they danced and made condom-demonstrations and gave licenses to other new youths.

It was also seemingly interesting because they had cake and a microphone which they used to announce that it was the birthday of the Red Cross and how people were free to come and have cake, dance and know more about the Red Cross Youth activities.

This was all later stopped when the rain persisted making almost everything wet at around 5:30pm.

However, this didn’t discourage them. The youth leader informed the well wishers to go in the main hall where the kids were watching cartoons. Later they were assembled for the street dance course. This was the most fun because most of the youths were eager to see the dance. Later, they were taught and they practiced with cake, popcorn and soft drinks until closing time.
