It's time to focus on asylum children

Av Jennifer Tumusiime, Youth Delegate from Rwanda

(30.03.2009) As far as I can remember, there has always been a dream of having a children group, especially between the age of 4 and 12 and from an asylum centre. This dream came true January 29th when Aline and I decided to take up the project and follow it up!

The major aim for this children project is to have the children maximize their skills in activities like painting, singing , dancing, indoor games and above all to have them and the local children to socialize and get to know each other.

So far we have registered ten of them. They are always here every Friday at Café Solferino at the Humanitarian house from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in Skien. The children like it so much here and they don’t show any boredom while they’re here.

I asked one child, a child who preferred to be anonymous, what she enjoys most here. She said: - I like the way they give me the chance to draw what I want with all the colors I want!

The children came with their parents while the parents came for the women group which takes place at the same time. To reinforce them, we decided that there shall be some bites for them as well as breaks, which we use to play games they like or those that we bring up and seem interesting to them.

Our dream is to expand the group and to recruit some youth volunteers to be part of it so that they continue with the project when we leave. Apparently, we want outside children to be part of it to so that they can socialize and get to know each other.
Speaking to the leader of the Telemark District, she said she is proud of this project and hopes it is sustained.
