The Roleplay "On the run"

Av Sunniva Lofthus Sandø

(04.01.2007) Be a refugee for 24 hours. Through the role play On the Run we show youth how it is to run away. The Red Cross Youth arranges On the Run to create increased understanding and tolerance among Norwegian youth.

World wide 40 million people are on the run. Many have been forced away from their homes and have lost their close ones. Hunger, thirst, poverty and desperation are challenges many refugees meet on their way to a better future. In addition to this, many face prejudices and racism in their new countries.

What does the Norwegian Red Cross Youth?

The role play On the Run is about being on the run. The Red Cross Youth arranges the role play which lasts 24 hours. On the Run gives a simplified, yet realistic experience of how it is to be a refugee. The role play mainly takes place outdoors.

Red Cross Youth instructors act as bureaucrats, border patrol and other characters in the game, while ordinary youth participates. The participants are organized in families who have to try to flee to Norway. The goal of On the Run is to prevent racism by increasing young people’s understanding of what a refugee goes through. The target group is young people aged 13-30.
