(04.06.2009) The Akershus district is known as a successful district to mobilize youths. The Bærum Red Cross Youth group was one of eight active local groups in Akershus. But when we arrived at our district, this group was not functioning, so we started to think how we could get the group back in action.
We spent a lot of effort to make Bærum Red Cross Youth active. We arranged many meetings and social gatherings during this period of time. We had to go through a long journey to recruit young volunteers and bring this group back in action.

Now, the group is back on humanitarian action with ten young and energetic youths, with a one year plan of action. The youth group decided to have activities on Hvalstad Asylmottak, which will be major activities for Bærum Red Cross Youth. We did a brief introduction about “aktivitet på mottak”, and some rules and regulation followed by the asylum coordinator.

We started our activity on Hvalsted with six young members with a motto to know the youths on the asylum center and to introduce us to them. It was the most wonderful meeting with all the youths. We spent the first two hours with some icebreaker-dancing with them, which was the main choice of youth in Hvalstad Asylum center.

Following our plan, we took them out from the asylum center and arranged a barbeque on Hvalstad beach along with 30 other youths and four young volunteers. We spent four hours on the beach playing volleyball, football, badminton and swing. We cooked food for them during this activity. We felt very proud when we saw smiles on their faces and when came to us and said: “THANK YOU VERY MUCH!” They had a lot of energy, and where very happy which gave us the message that we did a good job.

The reason why we started this activity was to take youths out of the asylum center and involve them in many creative activities. So, we had an annual plan for 2009 including indoor and outdoor activity such as hiking, barbequing, swimming, bowling, and skiing.
We hope Bærum Red Cross Youth will continue their good effort to keep the group active like they are now, and we wish all the best.
