From Sudan to Finse

Av Mohamed Tahir Mohamed Osman, Youth Delegate from Sudan

(26.03.2009) On 4th of March we started our journey from Bergen to Finse. The objective for our trip was to participate in a winter course with Hordaland Red Cross for three days in Finse, and it was a very fun trip.

When people talked about Finse, they said that it will be very cold, and the temperatures might be as cold as minus 17 to minus 20 degrees. I was afraid at first because when I travelled by train from Bergen to Oslo a couple of months back, I saw the snow, and it was like mountains. I pleaded may it not be so cold.

In the evening on our first day, we went out in the snow with the participants from the hotel, to where the training was. The participants were divided into groups and each group where digging a trench in the snow to protect them from snowstorms.

The second day was no less fun than the previous one. We drove approximately for 15 minutes with the snow mobile to watch the practical training. The participants were divided into 4 groups, with each group consisting of 5 people. Then they started the searching simulation in the snow.

On the third day we spent four hours in the snow. It was a practical simulation of the training. A volunteer from the Red Cross brought his dog with him when he was buried in the snow. The trainees were not informed that a man and a dog where inside the snow, but they came for training, and we were waiting for what they would do. They came and started the search. After a long search they found them, and the man and his dog were rescued.

- There is no bad weather, only bad clothing. Håkon, Taha and Mohamed.

We had to leave Finse in the evening to go to Oslo to attend the annual district youth council assembly.

We were very happy because it was going to be a new experience for us in Norway. And we would meet the other youth delegates after a long period of time.
After this experience I realized that the saying in Norway: there is no bad weather, only bad clothing, was totally right.
