(16.12.2008) There’s no question about the importance of giving blood. On the 31. October, we aimed to let the people know how and why they should donate blood, as we tried to convince as many as we could to give men and woman in need for blood a helping hand.
People know from ancient time the importance of blood to life. If he has lost much of it, his life might be in danger. What if a child undergoes surgery and needs a blood transfusion? And if you see a girl at a very young age suffering from blood cancer and needs a blood transfusion? Or an older man being treated for severe burns and has the need for a blood transfusion? It’s true that the treatment develop regularly and many operations are being conducted daily and require blood transfusion to the patient - but if you donated blood to save his life, people do not know - your goal is humanitarianism and voluntary work.
Why blood donation?
The answer is simple and easy. It is the right of each patient to have a gift that will not only be good for raising his moral condition, but save his live as well. Blood is a very great gift.
We know that blood donations from healthy people to people in need is useful for incidents of various kinds - surgery - cases of bleeding before and after childbirth for women, broken blood cells and sickle-cell anemia or leukemia.

Norwegian Red Cross in Bergen had young volunteers working in their free time helping people in need who is never going to see them, organized in groups, one of these is the students group. They have different activities, and one of them is the blood donation activity.

On October 31, on Halloween day, a group of students organized a stand contained of information on the Red Cross and how to donate blood. The activity has an active role in gaining the confidence of people. The volunteers meet people with smiling face, offering them the idea of donating blood.

Through the program, a group of volunteers distributed forms in the streets and on public places and explained how to donate blood. They explained to them how to fill in the form, and then sending them to the stand, smiling and welcoming them as they gave them coffee and cake.
An elderly man passed by and got information about how to donate blood. After having received the registration form he said "I will take it with me and return it another time". Hours later I met him and he told me that "you see me as an old man. I do not have the ability to donate blood, but if I had the ability to donated blood I would do it to save life of one of the people in need".
