(09.01.2008) The Red Cross Youth in Colombia had a special focus on the environment and global warming in their annual national camp where volunteers from all over the country get together. A dramatization of the future, a model of how we pollute and how this affects the atmosphere, and information on cellular phones as an environmental problem were only a few of the demonstrations taking place on the environmental market where all the districts had a stand.
Dramatization
We are in year 2050, people have destroyed the earth and the few that still survive have only a distant memory of fresh air, clean water and all the different species of animals that once existed. We meet two persons who are struggling to survive on portable oxygen equipment and they desperately tell us that we have the power to stop this process right now if we start working to save the environment. This dramatization which the Cordoba district showed us made us reflect upon what the earth will look like in the future and how the people will live.
– It was a memorable experience, says Lina from Medellin, the second largest city in Colombia. – The message was simple and clear, and in addition to this it was an experience which I will remember for a long time.

Dramatization of how the future will be if we don’t start to take better care of the environment. The air is no longer clean and the ones still living have to breathe through oxygen equipment to survive.
Reasons and consequences
There was a competition to have the best stand and the Antioquia district won with their environmental game. They made a game in human size where the participants had to answer questions about the environment. The questions were about the reasons for global warming and their consequences. A correct answer gave the participant a green flag to put on his or her token (which of course had the shape of the earth) and the participants could move one step forward. This was a really informative game and an interesting way to teach youth about environmental problems. The prize for the best stand was money to arrange a workshop on global warming in their home district.

The Red Cross from Antioquia won the competition to create the best and most inventive stand with their environmental game. The game board in human size lies on the floor while the small models of the earth in the hands of the volunteers are the tokens.
To raise awareness
-The Red Cross can contribute to convey a message that is so important to us all, says Lina. In the Colombian Red Cross Youth there is a focus on the environment and being in the nature in the activity Aire Libre. This is a great activity and although currently there are few possibilities of recycling in Colombia the Red Cross Youth is raising awareness about environmental problems. I think that it is important that also the Red Cross Youth in Norway start taking more into account the environment, and it would be nice if I as a Norwegian Youth delegate could talk about and be proud of what the Norwegian Red Cross Youth does for the environment!

By using a model the Red Cross volunteers showed us how the greenhouse effect works and how we pollute.
