(17.02.2007) If Monday night is a calm night where everybody stay at home, it is absolutely not like that at the Red Cross house in Hamar. At this night two Red Cross volunteers and eleven children will be playing, having fun, acquiring knowledge, expressing themselves and at the end all of them can say "Jeg kan".
“Jeg kan” is the name of the children activity at Hamar Red Cross. Every Monday from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm eleven child come to the Red Cross house in Hamar to meet eachother, learn more about the Red Cross and about the seven principles, to cook sometimes and to make some hand work, to make outdoor activities and even to count from zero to ten in Arabic.
That’s why each child has his own note book on which he stick the note “Jeg kan” each time they learn something new.
The Red Cross volunteers prepared a very specific plan, for every Monday, they presented it to the parents to agree on it. They put on this plan seven “Jeg kan”. Till yesterday night all the children have had on their note books, four “Jeg kan”
- “jeg kan”, because they can understand and remember the seven principals of the red cross
- “jeg kan” , because I know more about neutrality , specially on the children rights
- “jeg kan” , because they understand why every one has a name .
- “jeg kan” , because they can count from zero till ten in Arabic.
This activity has been activated since several weeks and it is going to continue for more weeks.
-It is really fun to work with the children, and all in all it is a good experience, says Marte, one of the volunteers. -It is amazing how the children come every time very excited and full of energy to learn more and more and I am very astonished of how the children are curious to know about any subject and they also compete in a friendly way, but this fact never stopped them from helping each others and being good friends.
It is really strange, how much do we learn ourselves by working with the children because they are the clear example of honesty, spontaneity and endless happiness. While working with them you can’t stop smiling, laughing and seeing that life can be much easier than you think.
